At Waterloo Care Home, we pride ourselves on providing the very best care, comfort, and nutrition for our residents. Recently, we were delighted to welcome an NHS Community Dietitian to our home 💙 — following our request for extra support and additional training to continue improving the way we care for our residents.

Hands-On Observation and Support

👩‍⚕ During her visit, the dietitian spent valuable time with our wonderful care team, observing the tea trolley round and lunchtime service 🍽. She spoke directly with both staff and our talented kitchen team 👨‍🍳, gaining real insight into how we support residents’ health, well-being, and enjoyment of food.

This hands-on approach meant she could see the high standards of nutrition and care at Waterloo Care Home in action.

Upcoming Group Training Sessions

📅 We’re thrilled that she will be returning in September to deliver a series of group training sessions for our staff throughout the month. These sessions will give our team the chance to build on their already excellent knowledge and ensure we continue to provide outstanding nutritional care.

Ongoing training and professional input like this helps us stay ahead in delivering the best possible dining experience for residents in care homes.

Glowing Feedback for Our Team

💬 Here’s what the NHS Community Dietitian had to say after her visit to Waterloo Care Home:

“This is one of the best care homes I have been in.
You have really good staff who do their jobs well and are lovely to the residents.
Your nutrition is already really good and you are already doing most of the things required. I had a lovely visit here.”

👏 This fantastic feedback is a true credit to our incredible team, whose dedication and compassion shine through every single day.

Why Nutrition Matters in Care Homes

Good nutrition plays a vital role in residents’ health, well-being, and quality of life. At Waterloo Care Home, we make it a top priority to ensure every meal is balanced, delicious, and suited to individual needs. From freshly prepared meals to thoughtful snack times, we aim to create moments of joy as well as nourishment.

Welcoming professionals like the NHS Community Dietitian helps us continue to grow, adapt, and keep providing the best care home dining experience in the community.

Experience the Waterloo Care Difference

We’re proud to be recognised for our high standards and caring approach.

An interactive workplace activity took place on Wednesday 30th July at 11:00am, focusing on effective communication — with a fun and light-hearted approach.

Staff on duty were invited to join the session in the garden for around 20 minutes. The short exercise brought a number of benefits, including:

Encouraging teamwork

Creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere

Offering a refreshing bit of new learning

Boosting team morale

Reducing stress

Supporting team building

Helping colleagues get to know one another better

There was even a small prize for the winners! 🥳

About the Activity:
The exercise centred around communication skills. Teams of two took part, with one person blindfolded and tasked with collecting and returning an object — guided only by their teammate’s verbal instructions. To add an extra challenge (and a few laughs), there were obstacles placed in the way, and each team was timed with a two-minute limit. Any team that touched an obstacle was disqualified.

The Winners:
Congratulations went to Team Olga and Cadence, who completed the task in just 1 minute and 8 seconds — the fastest time of the session! Their efforts earned them a well-deserved prize 🏆

Choosing a care home is never easy. Our practical checklist—based on advice from the Alzheimer’s Society—helps families confidently assess staff, facilities, activities, and future care planning.

The post Our Helpful Guide to Choosing a Care Home appeared first on Waterloo Care Home.

Select your care home with confidence

We are the first to admit that moving into a care home is not something people will look
forward to. That’s why we do our best to help them settle in. But first, the family needs to
know that the care home they are choosing is a good fit for their loved one.

We have produced a condensed version of the checklist from the Alzheimer’s
Society for your benefit.

Consider the following when choosing between homes:
• The Staff – Are the staff attentive and welcoming? – Are you allowed to visit
unannounced? – Do the residents appear happy – are they talkative?

• The Building – Is there anything about the appearance, atmosphere, cleanliness or
furnish of the home that makes you question its upkeep? – Are there adequate transport
links and is the road noisy? – Is the building secure, so residents can’t put themselves in
danger? – Are toilets readily accessible?

• The Day – Do residents have access to their own entertainment, and the ability to be
alone? – Are residents supported throughout the day with activities? – Can residents
choose how often they wash? – Can you see a current menu for all meals, and do they
take into account your loved one’s dietary requirements? – Can a relative stay
overnight?

• The Future – What processes are in place to maintain relevant care plans? – Can the
resident stay in the home towards the end of life, or will they need to move again? – How
does the care home communicate with families?

This is a judgement call that only the family can make. We hope providing this information
helps you to make an informed decision.

We have tried to put all the relevant information about our care home on this website.

We are happy to take your questions and offer advice on this important choice.

What Are Dementia Activity Boards?

Dementia activity boards, also called busy boards, are tactile, interactive tools specifically designed to aid individuals living with cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. These boards are mounted with everyday household items like door handles, latches, switches, remotes, locks, and textured materials.

Often colourfully designed, these sensory boards not only provide cognitive and motor engagement, but they also offer comfort through familiarity. For those facing memory challenges, engaging with known items can evoke memory recall, encourage conversation, and reduce agitation.

Benefits of Using Busy Boards in Dementia Care

Busy boards are far more than a pastime. Their design is intentional, with a range of therapeutic benefits:

Cognitive Stimulation – Interacting with locks, switches and remote controls encourages thinking, decision-making, and memory recall.

Motor Skill Engagement – Rotating, pulling, sliding, and turning components improve fine motor coordination and hand strength.

Reducing Anxiety and Agitation – Familiar tasks can have a calming effect, promoting a sense of purpose and control.

Memory Recall and Emotional Connection – Touching and manipulating familiar objects may trigger personal memories or recognition, sparking meaningful interaction.

Safe, Independent Exploration – These boards provide a low-risk way to stay mentally and physically active, supporting emotional wellbeing.

Common Features on a Dementia Busy Board

A well-designed dementia board typically includes:

Light switches

Chain locks

Door handles

Textured fabric panels

Abacus-style sliders

TV remotes

Latches, hooks, and keypads

These elements mimic real-life tasks, reinforcing familiarity and encouraging active hands.

Ideal Settings for Busy Boards

Busy boards are commonly used in:

Care homes and residential nursing facilities

Day centres for the elderly

Private homes with in-home carers

Occupational therapy settings

They are usually mounted on walls at accessible heights or presented on lap trays for bedridden residents.

Why Every Dementia Care Facility Should Have One

Investing in a dementia activity board is investing in dignity, interaction, and person-centred care. These boards bridge the gap between cognitive decline and daily engagement—providing something meaningful, familiar, and safe.

They’re not just tools—they’re comfort objects that create routine, peace, and purpose.

FAQ Section

What is a dementia activity board used for?

A dementia activity board helps with cognitive stimulation, sensory engagement, and reducing anxiety by using familiar objects in a safe and interactive way.

Can busy boards improve memory in dementia patients?

They may not restore memory, but they often trigger memory recall and help patients reconnect with familiar tasks.

Are dementia boards suitable for all stages of dementia?

Yes, though they are especially beneficial in the early to middle stages. Boards can be customised for different ability levels.

What should I include on a DIY busy board for dementia?

Include light switches, handles, locks, keypads, textured fabrics, and other safe, familiar household items.

How often should dementia patients use busy boards?

Daily interaction is beneficial, but even short, regular sessions can provide cognitive and emotional benefits.
